New trend in immigration reform

Latest news about the lower chamber of congress passing immigration law are troubling. Three aspects of the initiative are especially troubling because reflect a retrograde thinking that gives force and violence an upper hand. The first one is the proposal to stop the right of any who is born in the USA to become a citizen, as the proposal states that children born from illegal parents will not be able to claim for their citizenship. The second is the penalization of being in this country illegally by stating that that kind of offence is a felony. Finally the building of a wall all along the USA/Mexico border brings back memories of the Berlin wall. The immigration system is badly broken and has to be fixed, but it has to be done in a way that is holistic and inclusive, where illegal immigrant will be able to come out of the shadows and legalize their status -it could be through the payment of a stiff fine- and the establishment of a process that allow legal immigration.
